Where to begin with saving
If you are not sure where to start, follow these three steps in order. Each one links to a guide and a tool. All of it is general information, not financial advice.
Step 1: Get a first cushion going
A small buffer keeps one bad bill from becoming debt. If saving feels out of reach, begin with a very small, repeatable amount.
- What to do first if saving feels impossible
- How much to keep in an emergency fund
- Build a savings habit when income is tight
Step 2: Free up money you are already spending
Find recurring costs you no longer use, then decide whether small tricks or bigger expenses matter more for you.
- Subscription audit worksheet to list recurring costs and see each one per year
- 30-day spending pause planner for a short reset
- When to stop chasing small savings and fix the big expenses
Step 3: Decide where the cash should live
Once you have money set aside, compare account types by access, fees and insurance, not only by rate.
- Choosing a savings account type
- Savings growth calculator to compare two rates you enter
- Are high-yield savings accounts worth it?
Rewards and discounts come last, because they only help if they do not push you to spend more: see does couponing actually save money and how cashback apps and cards work together. The full list of tools is on the tools page.
